About Body Fat Calculator
Body fat percentage is one of the most reliable indicators of overall fitness and health, often more meaningful than body weight or BMI alone. This free body fat calculator uses the US Navy method, a well-established formula that estimates your body fat percentage from simple circumference measurements. For men, the calculation requires your waist circumference (measured at the navel), neck circumference (at the narrowest point), and height. For women, an additional hip measurement (at the widest point) is included for greater accuracy. Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, the body fat percentage accounts for how your weight is distributed, making it a far better gauge of whether you carry excess fat or lean muscle mass. Healthy body fat ranges differ by gender: men should generally aim for 10 to 20 percent, while women should target 18 to 28 percent. Fitness professionals categorize body fat into five levels: essential fat (men 2-5%, women 10-13%), athletes (men 6-13%, women 14-20%), fitness (men 14-17%, women 21-24%), average (men 18-24%, women 25-31%), and obese (men 25%+, women 32%+). For the most accurate results, measure first thing in the morning before eating, use a flexible tape measure pulled snug but not compressing the skin, and take each measurement twice to confirm consistency. This calculator also shows your fat mass and lean mass in kilograms or pounds, so you can track changes over time as you work toward your fitness goals.
